Sponge gourd, also known as Luffa, is a vine-like plant related to the cucumber. It requires proper care for accurate growth and harvest. Luffa is rich in zinc, thiamine, magnesium, iron, and vitamins A and C and has antioxidants and antibacterial properties. It has been used to cure skin diseases, jaundice, diabetes, and other health issues. Growing luffa gourds can be a healthy choice.

A treatment of Thiamethoxam@5gm/15Ltr of water can be applied to control infestations of aphids and thrips in the field.

Luffa should be harvested in the fall when it’s lightweight, tan in color, and its skin has completely dried to a hard shell. After cutting the fruit with one to two inches of stem attached, immerse it in warm water for 20 minutes, remove the seeds, and soak it in a 10% bleach solution for an hour to clean it. Rinse well and dry in a well-ventilated area before storing.

Harvesting tender and medium-sized fruits is recommended to obtain a good yield. On average, 66-83 quintals of produce can be obtained per acre.
